British Values
At Rosetta, we think it very important that our pupils develop a strong set of values and principles, and that they question and understand what it means to grow up in British society. Through a rich and challenging curriculum, and through a focus on key events in British history, we invite pupils to reflect upon their role in a diverse, multicultural and multi faith society.
At Rosetta we value each and every member of our school community as individuals and respect their rights and freedom. The government set out its definition of British values in its Prevent Strategy. These values are:
- democracy
- the rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect
- tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that our children have the opportunity to learn and reflect on the British values that underpin our lives. Including for example, celebrating HM Queen’s 90th birthday in school, visiting the Houses of Parliament to meet our local MP, and visiting our local Town Hall, to enable the children to understand more about local and national government and democracy. Our curriculum enables pupils to recognise the valuable role that they play as emerging citizens in British society.

Through a discreet unit in Year 6 called ‘Every Child a Good Citizen’, we equip pupils with a mature, respectful and sensitive appreciation for difference and diversity. In discussing what it means to be British, children engage critically with stereotypes and prejudices and develop an understanding of how we can celebrate our heritage and home cultures whilst also embracing the ties that bind us together. An appreciation we hope that these children take with them to their chosen secondary school.
We develop several pupils from each year group into Young Leaders (replacing the School Council) and these children make decisions about life in school. Children seek to be elected as class representatives and participate in hustings and voting processes to bring an element of real life democracy into the classroom. We encourage pupils to show care and consideration for others through charitable work and using our Young Leaders’ programme, we ensure that all children can influence decision making. We support all of the main British charity events within school, such as Sport Relief, Comic Relief (Red Nose Day) and Children in Need. We always send children to participate in the WE day celebrations.

Our school is enriched by the faith of our school community and we teach an inclusive Religious Education curriculum for all, which teaches pupils about the beliefs and practices of major religious groups, and the shared values that religion can promote in synchrony with core British values. There is also a strong emphasis throughout the PSHCE and SEAL curriculum on individual rights and responsibilities, including respect and valuing difference in the way people choose to live in modern Britain. Our teaching helps the children learn to understand and appreciate the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and that of others. They understand and appreciate the range of different cultures within our school and beyond our local community. We see this as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain.
As a school that serves a diverse community, we take our responsibility to promote community cohesion seriously. A senior member of our teaching staff is our Community Cohesion Leader, who organises events to involve all members of our school community, including educational Parent Workshops.

With regard to the children’s moral development, we hold regular class reflection time and various assemblies which allow and encourage our children to discuss British values and understand how these are relevant to them. We focus on the difference between right and wrong; respecting the civil and criminal law of England and understanding the consequences of our behaviour and actions.
Children have a wide range of opportunities to work collaboratively within and outside the classroom, across year groups and phases to improve their social development. We promote ‘Buddy Systems’ for mid phase admissions and Peer Mediators (Play Leaders) who work to actively support other children throughout the day, including break-time and lunchtimes. Our children visit Lille in France in Year 5 to compare and contrast life in France with that in London, attend PGL and other adventure holidays and take school educational visits across London to visit our most historic British landmarks.

Rosetta children participate in and respond positively to artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities, including attending theatrical performances and many sporting events and fixtures. Our sporting teams exemplify the value we place on teaching all of our children the value of teamwork, sportsmanship and fairness, which we believe are essential British values. Our teams are usually very successful. A range of children from across the school participate in the Newham Paralympics and this year we were victorious.
Our children are encouraged to reflect on the predominant religious and moral values that underpin our democratic and multi-cultural British society. Spiritual development is encouraged through RE lessons, assemblies, and celebratory events, our children learn about the similarities and differences of other religions and are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs whilst tolerating the different viewpoints of others including those who do not have a religious faith.
We ensure that all children develop a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning differences about themselves, others and the world around them.
