Our mathematics learning and teaching aims to ensure that each child develops as much as they possibly can, not only the mathematics skills and understanding required for later life, but also with an enthusiasm and fascination about the magic of maths itself.

We are continually aiming to raise the standards of achievement in Mathematics at Rosetta and we try to make the learning and teaching as suitable as we can for each individual child.



Contextualising Maths!

We always try to contextualise Maths, so that the children understand the links between the mathematics that they learn in school and how to use Maths in real life. We try to show that mathematics is not an isolated subject, by linking learning to the practical matters of the real world around them.

Mathematics Teaching

 Mathematics is taught mainly as a separate subject but we try to link maths as much as we can with other areas of the curriculum, particularly ICT, English and the units of our International Primary Curriculum.



We follow the Primary National Strategy for Mathematic and in each lesson we teach a mental and oral starter activity (what we refer to as our 'Maths Superstars' time), a main activity, with input and modelling, and then one or more plenary or review sessions, where we think about or consolidate what the children are learning. 

Children engage in:
·         The development of mental strategies
·         Written methods
·         Practical work
·         Investigations
·         Problem-solving
·         Mathematical discussion
·         Consolidation of basic skills and routines
Maths Superstars

Every mathematics lesson, our children take part in ‘Maths Superstars’, where they work hard to show their knowledge of mental maths in return for stickers and other rewards.

Our Maths Superstars are those children who learn brilliantly or try really, really hard to achieve in their mathematics lessons, by learning their times tables and number bonds by heart.

They are chosen by their teachers to get a cup or a badge in Good Work Assembly and then they may be chosen as our overall Maths Superstars for the term and get to go on a trip bowling to All Star Lanes, Westfield Stratford City (for years 3 to 6) or Cookie Island (for years 1 and 2). Maths Superstars from Foundation Stage have a small party in the Rewards Room. 

Please help to support your child by helping them to learn their times tables and number bonds and to become the Rosetta Maths Superstars!

Mathletics

Rosetta children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 all have an individual subscription to the Mathletics on-line interactive learning platform. Here it is possible to practise all areas of Mathematics, including listening to Times Tables songs and competing in Mathematics games against children from around the world. Some teachers at Rosetta set homework on Mathletics, as it follows our school curriculum. PLEASE USE MATHLETICS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! It will help you increase your confidence in calculating!
